To Ping or Not to Ping

blog trafficDo you ping your site after each blog post or on some type of regular schedule?

I was reading an article on the pros and cons of pinging your blog and decided I would run my own unofficial experiment. Starting today I’m going to start pinging the blog posts for my two sites after each submission to see if it helps increase traffic. If it does, I will also determine if it is quality traffic or if it instead simply sends more spam traffic my way.

I will also continue to send out notifications via social media, as I have been doing to Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, and Stumble Upon.

For those not familiar with the term “ping”, it means that you are sending out a notice to assorted search engines, blog registries, and directories that your blog has been updated or changed in some noticeable manner. It is somewhat like the kid in the classroom that feverishly waves their arm in the air to physically say “pick me, pick me” to get the teacher’s attention.

The search engines, such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo will discover your site in due time but we all want this to be sooner rather than later, don’t we. So the intent is to speed up this process of discovery.

There are three ping sites that I will use but not all at the same time as that would look problematic to Google and actually do harm to my sites. Instead
I will use one site per week over the next three weeks and report back my findings. I have not used any of these programs in the past so this will be a clean slate assessment.

This is what I will let you know –

  • How easy they are to use
  • If they created any problems with my sites or computer
  • If they have reporting functions, and
  • If I saw any significant results

I will also do my best to publish the same number of blog posts each week in order for the testing criteria to be similar. Plus I fully understand that a three week test may not be long enough to produce any significant increase of traffic.

These are the 3 ping sites –

  • Google Ping – I figure I should start with Google, right.
  • Bulk Ping – Never heard of them but popular
  • Pingler – Comes with good reviews

BTW – All are free ping sites, I am not going the route of buying traffic nor spending any money to try to increase traffic. As mentioned, I am running this experiment on two sites, if you’d like to visit my other site, just click here – Positively You Can

Have you used a service to ping your sites?

  1. I have many PING services linked to my blog. Since I use so many, I also have a plugin that makes sure the blog post only pings once – even if I change the blog post several times (from finding errors or by adding something I forgot).

Ping a search engine too often for the same post and they’ll ban you. 🙂

    • That is so true Bonnie, a little goes along way in Google’s eyes. I’m figuring one post and one service pinging multiple sites should be okay.
Do you recall the name of the plugin you use?

  2. Thanks for this great info. I am very interested in this. I’ll sign up for a follow up.

    • Hi Rochelle,

There are many other ping services as well, these tree simply got my eye.

When I wrote for Squidoo, which I still do occasionally, there was a ping service I used which I can’t find any longer and it helped improve traffic to those articles, so I figured why not give it a try.

  3. I’ve not heard of any of these so I’m going to be interested to hear how you get on 🙂

I may even join you with the Google Ping this week!

  4. I thought WP automatically pinged. You mean I’ve got to do it myself??

    • Hello Shan,

As I understand, Google does ping your site automatically and many WP themes come with ping notifications as well which is why many feel these ping services are not worth your extra time. My thought though, is that if it takes just a couple of minutes and does help to drive traffic, then it’s definitely worth it. If not, well then I’ll move on. It’s worth a try in my book. : )
