Fab Friday Blog Share Derby

fab friday blog share derbySeeing as how Churchill Downs will be the talk of the town tomorrow with the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby, I thought I’d share a bit of Kentucky Derby trivia before my weekly blog shares. Now I’m not much of a horse racing fan as I’ve probably watched more movies about horses and horse racing than actual horse races.

You know movies like:

But did you know this:

  • The Run for the Roses (aka the Kentucky Derby) rose blanket draped upon the winning horse is made up roughly 550 red roses.
  • Rain on derby day is not uncommon but it has never been postponed due to weather even though in 1918, nearly 2.5” of rain fell on race day.
  • The first national telecast took place May 3, 1952 and yes. It would have been viewed in black & white.
  • The fastest winning horse was the incredible Secretariat running a time of 1:59 minutes! He still holds that record today.
  • An estimated 120,000 Mint Juleps and 425,000 cans of beer will be served
  • An estimated 142,000 hot dogs, 18,000 BBQ sandwiches, and 32,400 jumbo shrimp (now that’s an oxymoron isn’t it?) will be served
  • The derby trophy weighs 56 ounces, stands 22 inches tall, is made of 14 karat gold.

  1. I love horses! I grew up on a farm and loved riding them. I also love the movie, The Horse Whisperer…. awesome stuff!

I read the post about Google +. It would be a shame if they decided to remove the social network. All that hard work people have done on their profiles to see them disappear. That’s unfair. 🙁

    • Hi Bonnie,

Totally agree, The Horse Whisperer is one of my favorites too.
I thought about you when I read the Google article, it certainly is unfair to those like you who have spent much time.

      Thanks for commenting!

  2. I liked the link with design tips and the writing prompts too. I always have fun when it comes to writing prompts trying to make them relevant for my relationship blog but they often spark off original ideas.

    • Hello Ana,

It’s amazing isn’t it how easy it is to have content ideas spark to life from simple little prompts.
      Thanks for commenting!

  3. Ooh, loving all the good links you posted, especially the writing prompts. 🙂

  4. Great shares this week Marilyn. I’m doing the 30 day writing challenge again this month for painter website so the writing prompts are perfect to help me through that.

Interesting about Twitter…I’ve noticed a drastic decline too. Most of my twitter feeds are pretty dead these days but I still do them for the links.

    • Hey Misty,

Yeah I was surprised too, guess it means we need to spend more time on FB and Pinterest. Your paint site is right up the Pinterest alley!
